CATALOGUING AND DATABASE

Careful management of any collection requires proper cataloguing and documentation.

The database should contain an archive of all documents related to the work of art, such as a certificate of authenticity, papers related to past exhibitions or publications, any correspondence with the dealer who sold the artwork and all documents related to it. This information is then collected into a detailed dossier of the artwork in all its aspects.

Essential is the study of the relationship between the materials constituting the art piece and the circumstances in which it is kept, because the environmental conditions can accelerate or limit its decay -when the work of art is carefully monitored and stored in a suitable space.

Particular attention is given to the issue of conservation. Since contemporary art often consists of perishable materials, it becomes extremely important in which manner the work of art is stored and the documentation of each restoration work it receives.

The database must be constantly updated to reflect new exhibitions, publications and restorations. A professional cataloguing therefore relates the life of the work of art and presents us with valuable guidance in identifying the best way to secure its existence.
